PMSI, a national provider of specialty products and services for the workers’ compensation market, ended 2009 with a flourish, releasing several new and enhanced client programs.
The company redesigned its proprietary web application, VitalPoint™, to provide enhanced transactional efficiency, increased productivity, and improved outcomes. VitalPoint is a secure platform used by claim professionals to manage pharmacy, medical services and equipment, and settlement-related transactions. It is available to PMSI’s customers through a single sign-on that can be accessed through www.pmsionline.com.
A PMSI subsidiary, PMSI Settlement Solutions, a provider of settlement services for the liability and workers’ compensation markets, launched a free web-based application called Drug VALUE Tool. Working with data from PMSI’s annual drug trends report, it uses a proprietary algorithm to calculate projected savings for a claim to determine if a review should be performed for a Medicare Set-Aside allocation.
Using PMSI’s database of over eight million pharmacy claims to project utilization trends, the Drug VALUE Tool instantly calculates average costs of an injured worker’s current drug treatment regimen projected over his life expectancy, incorporating the most up-to-date drug cost data. The free application, available at www.pmsisettlement.com/dur/, can also be used to estimate future pharmacy claims reserves.
PMSI also recently launched a client-only integrated clinical program called MedAssess that ensures appropriate utilization, effective intervention, and ongoing support throughout the injured worker lifecycle.
“National Council on Compensation Insurance data indicates that costs associated with prescription medications and medical products and supplies make up more than 50 percent of total medical spend, especially as a claim ages,” said Maria Sciame, PharmD, director of clinical pharmacy services for PMSI. “MedAssess will help payers mitigate inappropriate utilization, better manage high-risk patients, and drive positive outcomes.”
The MedAssess clinical product portfolio is built on a foundation of extensive data compiled by PMSI. The program is oriented around three progressive levels of focus: utilization control, targeted intervention, and care management. These programs include both short-term transactional focused strategies and long-term integrated strategies tailored to the injured worker’s needs. MedAssess is managed by clinical pharmacists and nurses with experience in the pharmacological therapy and medical treatment of workers’ compensation injuries.
